American Medical Scientists Awarded International Prize

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor and Dr. Jerry Jesseph, both of Bloomington, Indiana, have been awarded the 2012 Kaloy Prize in neuroscience and philosophy. This prize is for contributions in the area of brain science in relation to philosophic theories of knowledge. Dr. Taylor has become known around the world for her experiences outlined in her book, My Stroke of Insight, now translated into 30 languages. Together with Dr. Jesseph, a surgeon and professor, they co-authored, “Kant, Brain Science and the Stroke of Dr. Jill.” The prize is sponsored by the University of Geneva and the Academy of Athens and comes with a significant cash award. “Color Your Brain” event taking place at Bloomingfoods Stores
Bloomington, Indiana                                                   May 18, 2012

Jill Bolte Taylor BRAINS, Inc. is holding a “Color Your Brain” event, as part of the on-going Brain Extravaganza!, in conjunction with Bloomingfoods Market and Deli.

Children age seven and under may color-in an image of the brain and have it displayed at any Bloomingfoods location. In exchange for turning in their drawing, children will be able to select one free piece of fruit or vegetable from a list provided by Bloomingfoods. An educational handout about various fruits and vegetables and how they affect the brain is available at Bloomingfoods stores.

The picture of the brain is available for download as a: pdf or jpg.

Completed brain drawings may be dropped off at the customer service desk of any Bloomingfoods store (East, Near Westside, and Kirkwood Downtown) by July 15, 2012.

Children’s drawings will be on display through Labor Day, September 3. If children want their artwork back, the drawings may be picked up from Tuesday, September 4th to Sunday, September 30th.

Brain Extravaganza! to hit Bloomington April 28 2012
Bloomington, Indiana                                                   April 12, 2012

The not-for-profit organization, Jill Bolte Taylor BRAINS, Inc. is sponsoring a collaborative community art event called the “Brain Extravaganza!” to promote appreciation, awareness, and education about the human brain.

Twenty-two enormous (5’ x 5’ x 4’) fiberglass brain sculptures are in their final stages of preparation and will be on display as a collection from 12-2pm on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Bloomington South gymnasium.

Immediately following this 2-hour display, the 22 brains will be installed around Bloomington (13 brains) and on the IU campus (9 brains). The brains will be on public display from April 30th through October 15, 2012. Seventeen brains will be on display outside. Five brains will be indoor installations. A map of the exact locations of the 22 brains will soon be available to download at

These associated projects and events support the launch of the Brain Extravaganza!
• A professionally constructed Web-site ( will serve as the primary source of information about the project for the public
• A mobile app for smart phones will contain a brain game (requiring people to visit each brain to “color their brain”)
• Signs will accompany each brain with sponsor name, artist name, brain facts, and a mobile app game question
• April 26th: Opening night of Young Frankenstein, Indiana University Auditorium; Dr. Taylor will give the pre-show public lecture and three of the brains will be on display outside the IU Auditorium
• April 28th: All 22 brains will be on display in the same place, Bloomington South gym, 12-2pm
• May 4th: The Bloomington first Friday Gallery Walk of 2012, “A Night of a 100 Brains,” whereby nine Bloomington Art Galleries will have on public display 100 brains that are designs, paintings, drawings, cartoons, poems, etc. created by local school children K-12
• October 15th: The brain exhibit will be taken down
• Later, a Gala will be held by Jill Bolte Taylor BRAINS, Inc whereby the brains will be sold at auction, each with a set reserve price. Some of the brains may be kept by JBT BRAINS to be used as a traveling collection. Any monies received for the sale of the brains will go back into JBT BRAINS for future projects that serve the mission of the organization.
